Exercise and Mental Health in Older Adults | JW Bio
When we talk about exercise and older adults, the conversation most often focuses on physical outcomes. But the mental health benefits of regular exercise are equally significant and often less discussed.
Exercise and mood
Regular physical activity triggers the release of endorphins and other neurochemicals that improve how you feel. Research consistently shows that regular exercise reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety, with effect sizes comparable to medication in mild to moderate cases.
The role of routine and structure
A scheduled session with your biokineticist, or a regular class on a Tuesday morning, provides structure and rhythm to the week. Routine is known to support mental wellbeing and reduce anxiety. This is especially true for people who have recently retired or experienced a significant change in daily routine.
Social connection through exercise
Group exercise classes offer contact with other people. At JW Bio, our small group classes are valued by patients as much for the social interaction as for the exercise itself. Loneliness and isolation are significant risk factors for poor mental and physical health in older adults.
Exercise and sleep quality
Sleep problems are common in older adults and affect mood, cognitive function, and physical health. Regular aerobic exercise helps you fall asleep faster, sleep more deeply, and wake less frequently. Morning or afternoon exercise tends to support better sleep than vigorous exercise in the two hours before bed.
Physical confidence and its broader effects
When you are stronger and steadier, you are more likely to leave the house, socialise, and take part in activities you enjoy. As patients get stronger, they consistently become more willing to engage with life. The body and mind are not separate systems.
